Seeking Justice for
Sexual Abuse Survivors
If you are the victim of sexual abuse you have legal rights under the law. You may be able to bring criminal charges or you may be able to file a civil claim against the abuser or the institution that protected them. The traumatic effect of these crimes – both physical and emotional – can be devastating.
Some states have expanded their statute of limitations and you may be able to file a civil claim, no matter when the sexual abuse occured. Approximately 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys will be a victim of childhood sexual abuse. Most sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone known to the child such as a priest, teacher, coach, neighbor of family member or family friend. Most child sexual abuse goes unreported until adulthood.
